Vegan Travel: Prague (June 2019)

One more post covering the final leg of my 2019 Europe trip. (Previously, this trip: London, Munich, and Salzburg/Linz.)

I returned to Prague after loving the city so much the previous year, and because I didn’t get to go to the Terezin Ghetto & Concentration Camp like I had wanted to then

Also, I didn’t really eat as much or as well as I would have liked this time around, especially given how many vegan-friendly places there are in Prague! But I was horribly sick around this part of my trip, and my appetite was not what it usually is.

Wednesday, June 19

I didn’t arrive in Prague until the evening, so I didn’t have dinner in Prague that night. But I did walk around to take some nighttime photos around the city.

Crème de la Crème

After doing a walking tour of Old Town Prague. I went to Crème de la Crème, an ice cream and Italian gelato shop that has a handful of vegan flavors. The salted peanut butter flavor sounded like something delicious to get, so I did!

Country Life Restaurant

After spending the afternoon at the Spanish Synagogue, Old New Synagogue, Pinkas Synagogue, the Old Jewish Cemetery, and the Klausen Synagogue, I went to get dinner at Country Life Restaurant, which is entirely vegan. They have hot and cold food items that changes every day. Most items are sold by weight.

I got a little bit of everything, and to be honest, I’m not 100% sure of what I was eating. But it was all delicious and I was so full and satisfied. Something that was a burger made from oats (and maybe some seeds), soy protein & mushrooms in a brown sauce, quinoa, arugula that I topped with corn, nutritional yeast (I think), and hummus.

Friday, June 21

Friday was mostly spent going up to the Terezin Ghetto and Concentration Camp, which was every bit as somber and powerful as you might expect. It’s roughly an hour away by bus, so it wasn’t until late afternoon when we got back to Prague.

Crème de la Crème

I needed something to boost my blood sugar and my mood at that point, so I went back to Crème de la Crème to get more vegan ice cream. This time I got the vegan pistachio flavor, and I think it was even better than the salted peanut butter flavor that I got the previous day!

After ice cream, I needed actual food with some protein. There were plenty of places that I had bookmarked, but I didn’t want to walk too much more. My feet were killing me. So I ended up at Forky’s.

Forky’s

Forky’s is a chain that has several locations around Europe and serves all vegan food. They have bowls, burgers, wraps, and some other specialty foods. Everything sounded good, but I got the Curry Wurst just because it sounded intriguing. It wouldn’t be something I would come across most anywhere else, certainly not vegan. It was a curry-spiced vegan sausage, topped with a tomato-curry sauce, and served with a mix of sweet potato and regular fries. Not healthy by any means, but tasty.

Saturday, June 22

I had a TERRIBLE night on my last night in Prague. Whatever virus that floored me in Salzburg with a fever led to an awful cough, and I was only able to function due to lots of cough medications. But despite all the medications, the cough was the absolute worst this night, such that I couldn’t stop coughing for more than 15 seconds. I couldn’t get to sleep until 5:00am, and I had to get up at 8:00am to go to the airport to begin my trip back to New York City.

I couldn’t even think about eating anything until after I got to London’s Heathrow Airport.

Leon

Once I did get to Heathrow, though, my appetite was a little better. I decided to go back to Leon to get food. I got the Vegan Jack Wings (again), and the Better Brownie. Both yummy!

United Flight from London to NYC

I was quite impressed with the vegan food options offered on the flight. There was a red curry that was super tasty. And then while everyone else got a chicken or cheese sandwich, they offered me a vegetable sandwich. It was literally grilled vegetables on bread, but it actually wasn’t bad!

So, that wraps up my second-ever trip to Europe! I really hope the getting-sick-halfway-through doesn’t happen every time (I got horribly sick the previous year in Vienna). Later this year, I’m planning on returning to London, and going to Paris, Berlin, and Copenhagen for the first time!
