Vegan Eats of the Week 11/15/18

So, I’ve missed a couple of weeks of posting my Vegan Eats of the Week series, but the first time, it was because I didn’t have any foods that were new or worth mentioning again, and the second time, I had a bit of a hectic week.

But now I’m back and I have a little over two weeks worth of vegan goodies to share!

First up is all the gluten-free vegan veggie biscuits from Peacefood Cafe. The Tofu Scramble one had a surprising kick to it, so it must have had some kind of hot pepper in it, but I enjoyed it. And the Cheezy Spinach Artichoke Dip one has an actual dollop of spinach artichoke dip baked into the top of the biscuit, which gives it a creamy cheezy flavor and texture that most of their other biscuits don’t have. Yum!

In the past couple of weeks or so, Dig Inn opened a new location just a block from work, so a few of us went to get lunch from there. I hadn’t been to a Dig Inn before, but I was impressed that a good number of their offerings are vegan and gluten-free.

I got a custom bowl with a Farm Green with Mint as the base, with Maple Cauliflower with Chickpea Crumble and Sauteed Broccoli with Lemon as the two sides, and Grilled Organic Tofu as the protein. Everything was very strongly flavored (not necessarily a bad thing, but might be too much for some people), except for maybe the tofu, which was a tad bit bland. And the portions were moderate for the $11 I paid, which isn’t bad.

One of my favorite bars from Green Symphony is the Vegan Cheese Kale Bar, which they haven’t had lately, so I was super excited to see it back last week. It is best when it is fresh because whatever holds it all together (almond milk, cashews, and something else?) dries out after a day or so. When it’s fresh, it is somewhat moist and soft. And the cayenne pepper in it is just enough to give it a little bit of a kick, but not too spicy.

Another of the Green Organic Market gluten-free & vegan cookies I found are these Maple Pecan Cookies. They have a nice light and crisp crunch that is quite satisfying, but somewhat sweet enough that you may not want to eat too many of them (or maybe you do?). For me, just a couple of them are enough to satisfy my sweet tooth for a while.

Speaking of my sweet tooth, I had time and was in the neighborhood of Blossom Du Jour on 9th Ave & West 43rd St, and went in to see if they had any gluten-free vegan cookies I could get. (Most of their baked goods come from Clementine Bakery.) At first, they didn’t seem to have any as their counter was empty, but it turns out that they had JUST gotten a new delivery and hadn’t put them out yet. One of the few gluten-free items was their Lemon Raspberry Cookie. It was a little crumbly, but otherwise had a nice crunch. It’s a relatively big cookie that lasted me three days.

While walking down the snacks aisle at A Matter of Health, I found that one of my favorite snacks, P-nuff Crunch, has a new cocoa flavor. The puffs themselves are still made out of navy bean, rice, and peanut flour, but these have a light dusting of cocoa that may satisfy the chocolate lover in you. These aren’t overly sweet and have a modest amount of protein.

I had the chance to stop in a Red Mango in Lower Manhattan, and happened to discover that they had a non-dairy (and vegan) frozen yogurt and it was Chocolate Peanut Butter. There was little to no hesitation before I grabbed a cup to get a little bit to try. (I might have gotten more if I hadn’t just had a late lunch.) It was delicious, and I’m hoping to go back for more!

And finally, Perelandra Natural Foods is gearing up for Thanksgiving, and last Thursday had some seasonal offerings in their hot food bar that is perhaps helping to get people in the mood. They had a Holiday Lentil Loaf and Sage Roasted Tofu, both of which I smothered in mushroom gravy, and sauteed kale and green beans. Yum, yum, yum! This was all vegan and gluten-free!

Stay tuned in upcoming weeks for more vegan eats from around New York City!
