Some recent theatre things: 1-3 - @ellenlisa6 is Some recent theatre things: 1-3 - @ellenlisa6 is in town and won lotto for @sixbroadway and I got to go along! Front row! And three new-to-me Queens! 4 - Saw @wecomefromaway on September 11th. That was deliberate and very special. 5 - Saw the closing show of @btlmusical. Second and final time. 😢 6-7 - Took @foodexplorerrd to see @intothewoodsbroadway for her second time (but first time since transferring to Broadway and with the new cast).
Today was moving day! Exactly 3 weeks after closin Today was moving day! Exactly 3 weeks after closing on the apartment, I’ve moved in. I’m back in Astoria now, and actually off the same subway stop that I lived off of before when I lived in Astoria five years ago. It’s like coming home. Poor Jadzia … moving is always hard with cats, and she was trying SO HARD to hide in the closet and as far away from everything as possible that she pressed herself into the corner. It was kind of a hilarious sight but also kind of sad.
First #adultgymnastics class since November 2, 202 First #adultgymnastics class since November 2, 2021 when I broke my foot. Took it extremely slow/easy - literally only did handstands, cartwheels, and conditioning. The most difficult thing tonight I did was cartwheel step-ins, which was uncomfortable because of landing all my weight on relevé on the healed foot. Because the foot was mostly immobilized for 5-6 months, my toes had a hard time bending all the way forward or back and bearing weight in that position. I think my foot & ankle strength is good, but it’s still very stiff. I also worked around my torn rotator cuff tendon - backward rolls were a bit painful. But I worked my way up to holding some handstands because my body has largely forgotten how to hold handstands. I guess I still have the strength (how?) but it was a matter of reminding the muscles how to work. But I held a few handstands for ~30 seconds. It was hard not being able to do more. Watching the other adults doing stuff I was easily doing a year ago was disheartening. But I have to remind myself to take my time, rebuild strength and flexibility, and avoid getting injured further. It will take time. #gymnastics #exgymnast #formergymnast @chelseapiersnyc

Second date with the BOSU at the gym. Did a much s Second date with the BOSU at the gym. Did a much shorter cardio session (‘cause, man, I got so bored) and then did a bunch of exercises with the BOSU and as many PT exercises for my shoulder that I could remember (there are a lot of them now). And also lots of glutes stuff since that will be the key to preventing re-injuring my foot when I start gymnastics again (HOPEFULLY NEXT WEEK!) Then lots of stretching. Utilized my own flexibility class sequencing to get my straddle pancake maybe an inch off the floor now? And tested out my splits for the first time in like 6 months - left leg split is gone, but I can still lift my hands for my right leg split. But I know I’m very not square. Also tried a few backbends - my back feels pretty good actually, but my injured shoulder can no longer even get to 180 degrees with my spine, much less go past that for backbends. 😭 (That is going fuck with my ability to tumble correctly, never mind bars. So now I’m wondering if it’s a bad idea to try going back to gymnastics until my shoulder is fixed.)
I didn’t have any plans for today (for once), an I didn’t have any plans for today (for once), and I ended up wandering around the Lower East Side and then just outside of Chinatown until I stumbled on the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA), which I’d been planning to go to for years. So I went in. Interesting history and artifacts about the role of Chinese people in the US, how we were exploited and discriminated against, and Chinese culture adapting and persisting in the US. The 8-pound laundry iron is surprisingly heavy for its size. Item 17 on the restaurant menu about Gar Lew Chop Suey being the “same as above but better” made me laugh. (I still have no idea what “Chop Suey” is.) The Pocket Guide to China prepared by the US Army in 1942 surprisingly starts off telling the reader about how you can’t think of Chinese people as just stereotypes and that they’re not that different from Americans, but then there’s a whole section about Japanese people which is super cringey … (I know … the US was at war with Japan and Japan was the enemy. But still. Oof.)
No idea when I last went to a generic gym to just No idea when I last went to a generic gym to just work out. Over the last 8 years, all my strength training was done through aerial hoop or gymnastics or teaching online. But since I’m getting an ok to start back at gymnastics (SLOWLY), and I’ve been largely inactive since breaking my foot in November, I need to rebuild some strength before actually doing gymnastics again. I did 35 minutes of cardio first (ugh - the only cardio I can stand is indoor cycling classes) and then strength training. Most of the exercises I did today were on the BOSU, since I really want to emphasize stability of my legs and core. I also did a little bit of stretching because I also have done next to zero flexibility training, so my straddle pancake is GONE, and sitting in froggie was so uncomfortable, even after doing some glute activation exercises. 😭 I also did a few exercises my PT gave me to make sure my calf, ankle, and foot will be ready for gymnastics-type landings in the near future. I’m happy I can do single-leg heel raises, because there was a LONG stretch of time where I never though I’d be able to do those again. Gonna do this after work every Saturday at the very least, and it’s nice because the gym is pretty quiet. We’ll see what other day(s) I can make it.

The block I was on (I think 48th St between 6th & 7th Ave) seemed a bit chaotic - an ambulance was trying to get through but there were too many cars. Then I saw people trying to wave traffic aside to let the ambulance through, and then I saw a man on the ground, and two guys doing CPR. For a split second, I was going to keep walking since CPR was being done and EMS was on the way. Just then, I heard the guy giving chest compressions say “I’m so tired!” Without even thinking, I yelled toward them, “Do you need CPR help?” Both immediately yelled back, “YES!” I rushed over, dropped my bag on the ground, and took over chest compressions. The other guy said he would keep doing rescue breaths, and silently I said to myself, “Good - I don’t want to do mouth-to-mouth on a stranger if I don’t have to.” My CPR training took over and I was relatively calm. I remembered exactly how fast and how deep to do the compressions on the dummies I’ve practiced on. But when it was time for the friend to give breaths, he clearly didn’t know what he was doing. He didn’t tilt back the guy’s head or pinch off the nose. Rescue breaths are helpful but not 100% necessary since chest compressions alone can get enough oxygen to the brain. In the next couple of cycles of chest compressions, I had to guide his friend on how to give breaths correctly. (cont)
