Barbara offers nutrition counseling for anyone looking to eat better for weight loss, health improvement, disease management, and athletic performance.
Individual or group nutrition counseling:
- Initial counseling session (1 hour)
- Follow-up sessions (30 minutes)
Barbara’s philosophy of nutritional well-being focuses on science-backed recommendations that promotes enjoyment of eating and food, without the dreaded sense of deprivation most people think of when “eating healthy.” Fad diets and crash diets are not encouraged. Clients should never feel deprived nor feel hungry during the day.
Instead, Barbara focuses on promoting wholesome foods that are prepared healthfully and as naturally as possible, though she understands that sometimes busy schedules and commitments don’t always make that possible. She emphasizes fruits, vegetables, and whole grains as the foundation of a healthful diet, especially with the growing abundance evidence showing that eating more plants and less processed foods leads to better health outcomes.
(Barbara is a vegan/plant-based eater herself and would love to see more people adopting a plant-based diet – whether it be vegan, vegetarian, pesco-vegetarian, or semi-vegetarian – but she recognizes that adopting one of these diets is not always right for everyone. She will not force you to go vegan!
However, if you are looking to follow a vegan or vegetarian diet, Barbara is happy to help make sure you are doing it right, and eating balanced meals and snacks, and make sure you are getting all the essential nutrients your body needs.)
Mindful eating is an area that Barbara especially enjoys promoting and teaching. It is obvious that our culture and way of life lends to mindless eating, in which we tend to eat in a hurry, often while looking at a computer or smartphone or TV. This leads to both a physiological and a psychological lack of satisfaction with food, which creates a greater likelihood of overeating and/or making poor food choices. Barbara’s mindful eating approach aims to reset our relationship with food, to make mealtime (and snack-time) a fulfilling, conscious time devoted to enjoying our meals, which makes adhering to desired changes in eating habits much easier to follow!
Barbara’s background and education in sports nutrition also allows her to help athletes optimize their meals and snacks to achieve peak performance, strength gains, and body composition. She has worked with both athletic teams and individual athletes to help them choose the best meals and snacks, as well as when to eat them, to enhance performance.
