Vegan Eats of the Week 12/13/18

It’s been a couple of weeks since my last Vegan Eats of the Week post, but I apparently haven’t had nearly as many notable photo opportunities with my food. It’s actually required a bit of effort to get food that’s outside of the mundane this week.

But let’s start with my visit to VSPOT in Park Slope in Brooklyn. VSPOT has been on my list to visit for a very long time now, and it wasn’t until last Saturday that I finally made my way there. I had pretty much forgotten to eat lunch, so by 5:00pm, I was starving. There were a number of places I was trying to decide between, but I decided on VSPOT. It’s a 100% vegan restaurant with Latin cuisine. There were tacos, burritos, and even a quesadilla that I could have gotten … and I almost got their loaded nachos plate. But I ended up getting the Avocado BLT Wrap (gluten-free) and for dessert, I got the Brooklyn Brownie (which was one of their two gluten-free vegan desserts).

The wrap was amazing. There was some nicely flavored tofu instead of the  tempeh that was apparently not gluten-free, avocado (of course), lettuce, tomato, caramelized onion, and vegan sour cream. The wrap was gluten-free by request as well, and the texture is tougher and chewier than a regular wheat wrap. But even though you can’t really roll up the wrap as well, I really enjoy the texture of it!

The brownie wasn’t bad, but I’ve had far better vegan and gluten-free brownies before. This one had a strange, plastic-y taste – almost like it had maybe been sitting out for too long since it was originally made. The mousse on top was delicious, though!

Sometimes after my Monday BYKlyn classes, I stop in a Brooklyn Crepe and Juice. The last time I tried to go, though, they had run out of the gluten-free crepe batter, so I couldn’t get a crepe. But this past Monday, they had the batter, so I got myself a custom crepe with spinach, caramelized onion, grilled mushroom, and chickpeas. Very similar to one I’d gotten a few weeks ago, but the spinach made for a nice filling.

I went to both Peacefood Cafe locations in the past couple of weeks – the one on the Upper West Side and the one near Union Square. I love their gluten-free and vegan baked goods, especially their muffins and the veggie biscuits. The carrot coconut walnut muffin was a nice combination of flavors, as was the “cheddar” bacon jalapeno biscuit. I could eat these every day if I could.

Stay tuned in upcoming weeks for more vegan eats from around New York City!
